thoughts on writing

Forbidden Language. Not nearly as interesting or raunchy as you might think: this is just a bunch of words, word-usage and phrases that generally give me the irrits, and which I shall immediately ban (on pain of floggings with random furnishings) should anybody dare use them (except in dialogue), once I become president of the world.

Clarion South 2009, or bootcamp for sf writers, or how I spent 6 weeks in Brisbane and there was no weather at all that whole time.

Clichés: just say "no"! A bit like forbidden language, this one is there just to keep me happy. It's for all those things I see on TV or in movies that give me the irrits because they've been done to death and they are no longer funny or relevent and they really don't fit in with the character they're supposed to be portraying. I do make an attempt to see what it is about these things that don't work and to think through how they can still be appropriate or how to make them funny.
